There are two general types of filling materials – silver amalgam fillings and white-fillings or “composites.” While both materials are safe and reliable, composite fillings have a few distinct advantages over silver fillings.
Two of the major advantages of white fillings over silver fillings are the fact that white fillings require the removal of less tooth structure, and that white fillings are, of course, more esthetic. There are clinical situations where we still might elect to use a silver filling, and we will discuss these instances with you as they arise.
